‘Saw: 3D’ (AKA ‘Saw: The Final Chapter’) was released yesterday here in the UK on DVD and Blu-Ray and it’ll be the last chance Lionsgate have to pocket from the horror franchise that turned out to be such a phenomenal success. So it’s time to start brainstorming and fill that void. One such idea is for ‘Cube 3D’, a possible follow-up, reboot or complete remake of it’s sci-fi horror ‘Cube’. The original 1997 release, helmed by ‘Splice’ director Vincenzo Natali, was a very interesting mould of entrapment and lethal puzzles. ‘Cube’ was followed in 2002 with ‘Cube 2: Hypercube’ and then a couple of years later with the direct to video sequel ‘Cube Zero’.
Lionsgate are currently ‘fielding pitches’ for the project so it’ll be interesting to see which way they go. Personally I think a complete reboot is required to bring new life to an ailing franchise and to open it up freshly to a brand new audience.
