EUROPE & THE SECOND BATTLE
Usually when a bidding war takes place at Cannes over a film, it’s because investors have seen the film in it’s entirety, loved it, and want to make money off of it. Not so with ‘Battle Royale II’. All that appeared at Cannes was a 7-minute clip thrown together for the festival, and based on the short amount of footage it’s already sold to 8 European territories.
Deals were laid down for the UK, Germany, Hong Kong and Thailand among others, but nothing for the U.S. was even considered. I guess mainly because the first film never sold over here, but also because no American distributor would have the balls to try and show this in theaters. Have you seen the final shot of the trailer?
The plot for the sequel to 2000’s highly controversial original follows the survivors of previous Battle Royales, now working as a minor terrorist group to try and topple the government that is making kids kill each other. A new group of BR candidates are sent after the sabotagers, and all hell breaks loose. Many times.
Check out the films’ official site right here for all the latest (if you can read Japanese), and a more English ‘Battle Royale II’ site here. I guess at least we know it’s getting a cinematic release here the UK, and look’s like the U.S will have to wait for DVD yet again.
