Back last year word on the street was that Russell Brand (‘Get Him To the Greek’) was set to star in the feature adaption of BBC horror-comedy sitcom ‘Rentaghost’. The show (which I remember fondly) ran from 1976-1984 dealt with couple living in London who rented ghosts out to the public. Brand was expected to play the role of Fred Mumford, who founded ‘Rentaghost’, but the role has now gone to actor Ben Stiller. Stiller will take the lead role in the new 20th Century Fox production and both Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant (‘Night at the Museum’) will pen the script. For those Brits old enough to remember the show I’m sure will be excited to see a reimagining of the show on the big screen, but I feel its low-budget, bad effects and British charm was what made it what it was. It’ll also be interesting to see if all the classic characters will be reincarnated, such as cheeky jester Timothy Claypole, sneeze-ridden Nadia Popov and Hazel McWitch. But if anything what a great excuse to release more old episodes on DVD!
“Fred Mumford is a recently deceased guy determined to be more productive as a corpse than he was during his life as a slacker. He attempts to set himself up in a business with a couple of other ghouls, starting a temp agency for the dead. Mumford and cohorts rent out ghouls and ghosts to the living, until things go awry.”
