BHOOT SPARKS INDIAN HORROR CRAZE
Variety reports that the success in India of the homegrown horror film BHOOT (GHOST) has led to a new interest in fright fare in the country. BHOOT, which bucks Bollywood trends by not incorporating musical numbers into its story, has grossed $7 million in its first two weeks, and is the first in a string of genre films that looks to rival the recent output of other Asian countries. Up next are HAWA (WIND), SAAYA (SHADOW) from filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and DARNA MANA HAI (GETTING SCARED IS NOT ALLOWED), the latter from BHOOTs Ram Gopal Varma. Whether any of these will make it to U.S. theaters (as BHOOT did recently) has yet to be announced, but well keep you posted.
