ISLAND OF DEATH (Blu-ray)
Island of Death Reviewed: 26 May 2015

Goat sex, goat killing, lesbian sex, lesbian murder, blowtorch murder, rape: just some of the reasons the conservative UK censors decided that Nico Mastorakis' exploitation horror/sex film 'Island of Death' wasn't really what they wanted the good folks of Britain to be watching back in the day. Unlike many of the other so-called 'video nasties' from that time, 'Island of Death' is actually pretty light on the gore front, but it's the amoral motivations of the couple Christopher and Celia (Bob Belling and Jane Ryall) and particularly the treatment of women that clearly troubled the censor at the time and there are moments that still continue to shock. Politically incorrect is an apt description of 'Island of Death', but most horrors have been accused of that in their time. 'I Spit On Your Grave' and 'Straw Dogs' fell foul of the censors primarily because of the rape scenes. 'Cannibal Holocaust' was considered a no go on a number of levels, as was the film that inspired Mastorakis: 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', which he saw and (realising the huge profit that Tobe Hooper's now classic had made for such a low budget) decided to try the same.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (DVD)
Paranormal Activity 3 Reviewed: 26 January 2012

The cynics will argue that this paranormal franchise that captures supernatural things on camera is getting a little long in the tooth and predictable – but that all depends on what scares you, and it still has a certain authenticity to its cinematic style that wills you into believing what you are witnessing. The latest to take up the Paranormal Activity directing mantel is Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, whose take on Oren Peli’s story involves the same premise, but stirs more initial interest because it’s the ‘prequel’ to demonic events as we know them, and will hopefully give some insight into how it all started.

PSYCHO (Blu-ray)
Psycho Reviewed: 19 August 2010

Despite Blu-ray’s ever-growing popularity, there’s something rather inappropriate about revamping this subtle classic within a format that seems tailor-made for eye-catching blockbusters. With or without such technical wizardry, ‘Psycho’s’ appeal remains firmly lodged in the unseen horrors of the imagination, with a stripped-back repertoire of teasing glimpses and suggestive shadows. So although Hitchcock’s iconic work seems an unlikely addition to the high-definition market, its 2010 re-release adds aesthetically pleasing gloss to an already superb horror movie.

FRIDAY THE 13TH (DVD)
Friday the 13th Reviewed: 17 August 2009

This ‘Extended Cut’ of the most recent Friday film is rather more satisfying than the alternate theatrical version, which makes me wonder why they didn’t just release this in theatres in the first place.

DEAD SET (TV) (DVD)
Dead Set (TV) Reviewed: 02 November 2008

Yes it's only been a few days since E4's zombie-reality success 'Dead Set' hit our screens and already we're seeing the release of the DVD this Monday. Isn't this how all shows and movies should be released!? And to accompany this great mini-series comes a DVD equally full of excellent behind the scenes interviews and more.

HOUSE OF WAX (DVD)
House of Wax Reviewed: 12 October 2005

The latest horror remake released to DVD comes in a swanky card sleeve with a few cool extras, but it's a far cry from the 2 disc DVD set fans were hoping to get.

THE RING TWO (DVD)
The Ring Two Reviewed: 30 August 2005

Hideo Nakata's 'remake' of his own popular Japanese horror movie makes it to Region 2 DVD with a few extras, but as with the first films DVD release, you get the feeling that Dreamworks are holding back on the real extras for a special edition.

SEED OF CHUCKY: UNRATED AND FULLY EXTENDED (DVD)
Seed of Chucky: Unrated and Fully Extended Reviewed: 26 May 2005

Following the comicalness of later movies in the Child's Play franchise the Seed of Chucky came as little surprise to most horror fans. The self-referential gags had been touched upon in its predecessor, Bride of Chucky. But in this follow up they are embraced throughout the 90 minutes.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD (DVD)
Shaun of the Dead Reviewed: 14 January 2005

Shaun of the Dead has become one of the brightest and truly original comedy horrors that the UK has ever produced. I’ve been waiting so long for the genuinely talented team of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright to bring their innovative television style to the big screen. Expect even bigger things. But lets put aside all the positive plaudits this movie has been getting and concentrate on the recent Region 1 DVD release.

HARSH REALM: SEASON 1 (DVD)
Harsh Realm: Season 1 Reviewed: 28 July 2004

Harsh Realm was a little bit of an unknown to me. I was asked to review a copy of the latest DVD release of the first and only season of this unusual and original Chris Carter production. I was not even able to recall this series showing here in the UK, at least not on decent channels or shown at decent times. But surely it must have been somewhere.
