PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (DVD) |

The cynics will argue that this paranormal franchise that captures supernatural things on camera is getting a little long in the tooth and predictable – but that all depends on what scares you, and it still has a certain authenticity to its cinematic style that wills you into believing what you are witnessing. The latest to take up the Paranormal Activity directing mantel is Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, whose take on Oren Peli’s story involves the same premise, but stirs more initial interest because it’s the ‘prequel’ to demonic events as we know them, and will hopefully give some insight into how it all started.

PSYCHO (Blu-ray) |

Despite Blu-ray’s ever-growing popularity, there’s something rather inappropriate about revamping this subtle classic within a format that seems tailor-made for eye-catching blockbusters. With or without such technical wizardry, ‘Psycho’s’ appeal remains firmly lodged in the unseen horrors of the imagination, with a stripped-back repertoire of teasing glimpses and suggestive shadows. So although Hitchcock’s iconic work seems an unlikely addition to the high-definition market, its 2010 re-release adds aesthetically pleasing gloss to an already superb horror movie.

This ‘Extended Cut’ of the most recent Friday film is rather more satisfying than the alternate theatrical version, which makes me wonder why they didn’t just release this in theatres in the first place.

Yes it's only been a few days since E4's zombie-reality success 'Dead Set' hit our screens and already we're seeing the release of the DVD this Monday. Isn't this how all shows and movies should be released!? And to accompany this great mini-series comes a DVD equally full of excellent behind the scenes interviews and more.

The latest horror remake released to DVD comes in a swanky card sleeve with a few cool extras, but it's a far cry from the 2 disc DVD set fans were hoping to get.

Hideo Nakata's 'remake' of his own popular Japanese horror movie makes it to Region 2 DVD with a few extras, but as with the first films DVD release, you get the feeling that Dreamworks are holding back on the real extras for a special edition.

Following the comicalness of later movies in the Child's Play franchise the Seed of Chucky came as little surprise to most horror fans. The self-referential gags had been touched upon in its predecessor, Bride of Chucky. But in this follow up they are embraced throughout the 90 minutes.

Shaun of the Dead has become one of the brightest and truly original comedy horrors that the UK has ever produced. I’ve been waiting so long for the genuinely talented team of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright to bring their innovative television style to the big screen. Expect even bigger things. But lets put aside all the positive plaudits this movie has been getting and concentrate on the recent Region 1 DVD release.

Harsh Realm was a little bit of an unknown to me. I was asked to review a copy of the latest DVD release of the first and only season of this unusual and original Chris Carter production. I was not even able to recall this series showing here in the UK, at least not on decent channels or shown at decent times. But surely it must have been somewhere.
