Eli Roth is already getting excited about his involvement in yet another horror project. Roth will be producing on a sequel to last years religious documentary-styled horror ‘The Last Exorcism’ which could only muster a PG-13 rating. But it seems that director Ed Gass-Donnelly (‘Small Town Murder Songs’) and scribe Damien Chazelle will be upping the shocks and pushing for a proper R rating. ‘The Last Exorcism 2’ will see the return of actress Ashley Bell to play the possessed Nell Sweetzer where the action picks up three months after the events of the original. The production will begin shooting in New Orleans next month. You can read an excerpt from Roth’s interview with Deadline below.
“The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers.
Obviously with the title of the first one, we had not planned on a sequel, but we love the story and subject matter and had what we feel is an inspired idea to continue it.”
Not a lot is known about the sequel’s plot at this stage so just enjoy a quick recap of the original plot synopsis below.
“In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the evangelical Reverend Cotton Marcus was raised by his father to be a preacher. He agrees that the filmmaker Iris Reisen and the cameraman Daniel Moskowitz make a documentary about his life. Cotton tells that when his wife Shanna Marcus had troubles in the delivery of their son Justin, he prioritized the doctor help to God and since then he questions his faith. Further, he tells that exorcisms are frauds but the results are good for the believers because they believe it is true. When Cotton is summoned by the farmer Louis Sweetzer to perform an exorcism in his daughter Nell, Cotton sees the chance to prove to the documentary crew what he has just told. They head to Ivanwood and they have a hostile reception from Louis’s son Caleb. Cotton performs the exorcism in Nell, exposing his tricks to the camera, but sooner they learn that the dysfunctional Sweetzer family has serious problems.”
