An ASMR horror film, Spoiling You explores how manufactured intimacy can curdle into obsession, as a lonely man’s fixation on an online persona turns invasive and deeply destabilising.

The film centres on Drew, a lonely insomniac who becomes fixated on Miss Mutter, an ASMR-style creator whose videos promise intimacy and unconditional care. A chance to meet her in person begins to unravel the fantasy he has built.

“We were interested in how easily comfort can be mistaken for safety,” said co-writer and director Megan Tremethick, “and what happens when that assumption is quietly tested.”

The film stars Laurence R. Harvey, known for The Human Centipede films, alongside Stephen Kerr and Megan Tremethick, who also directs and she co-wrote the film with Lawrie Brewster. The project was produced in collaboration with British Horror Studio.

Spoiling You will make its World Premiere on Saturday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m. at the Romford Horror Film Festival in Romford, London, UK.

Filmed in Liverpool and other areas in the UK, which I picked up from some slight scouser accents and my time following a certain football club that wears red, I found Artifacts Of Fear a wonderful seventy-five-minute tight terror experience. The trouble is the actual film is a huge one hundred and ten minutes long caused by some poor choices in directing and editing that mar sometimes committed actors on screen. Plot holes, and several continuity errors on screen in editing that cause one to go okay how did that happen?

The stories all have inspiration in work like From Beyond The Grave (1974), The Screaming Skull (1958) and many others with a framing story of two young men seeking an item for a Halloween party they plan to host. Laurence R. Harvey who is the best part of the film takes a turn as a creepy curio shop dealer Mr. Kosminski who leads the ill-fated lads to a special item he has in his basement. The device with a skull and menacing dialogue by Paul Kelleher, demands silver for a story which launches the rest of the film.

The first one, a young policewoman is terrorized by a masked serial killer who has been terrorizing the city. She is working on the case with lots of running, looking scared, anguished screams in one generic look at what a slasher film is with an ending. Way too many shots of bits of furniture, feet running etc. all to pad it out creating a glacial pace. Moments of real terror are lost such as when the young girl is leaning against her doors with the maniac outside. What a moment for silence, a wary look at the door followed by a thunderous knock. The saving grace of this first story is the rather frightening video footage that the policewoman must watch of a murder victim as part of the evidence and her investigation. The best shot is the horrible sounds of mutilation on camera followed by the crazed killer revealing himself as an old man in a blood-stained apron. The blank passive expression in the camera is a priceless moment of cold-hearted dread.

Artifacts Of Fear just shrieks to be edited down. The number of shots used particularly in moments from other stories such as the final segment when we see three angles of a person smoking a cigarette cut to music. In that same last segment, there are glaring continuity troubles when the character is watching fireworks outside at night. Cut to a shot of eyeglasses with no reflection of the fireworks in them. The same character is drinking from a flask in his hand that magically disappears in the next moment. In many of the other stories, useless reparative shots are used to pad out stories or segment length that make one go why why why why and did I say why? Editing moments of a music instrumental music track when music is used to accent dread does not make one tap one hand or make it into a music video.

The film has some practical blood and some visual effects that one expects however it mares some committed acting performances, particularly from the already mentioned Laurence R. Harvey, one of the brothers in the third story Ted played by Carl Wharton, and the two young guys who have their moment in the wrap-around segment Luke Morgan as Alex and Cameron Patmore as Nathon.

Often indie horror films are a training ground for people to learn their craft. The object of appraising a film of this nature is not to destroy or to belittle effort as some do but to be honest as a horror film and a film for public consumption. Artifacts Of Fear (2023) had potential however it looks cobbled together under the guise of character development coupled with a pace that kills, lots of shots of people turning heads in various directions and many views of the same things that will make you scream at the screen, and not in a good way.

Hex Studios is excited to announce Black Chariot, an intense and deeply disturbing supernatural horror directed by Lawrie Brewster (Lord of Tears, The Unkindness of Ravens), inspired by the macabre genius of Alfred Hitchcock. Drawing from Hitchcock’s dark thrillers like Rebecca (1942) and Psycho (1960), Brewster seeks to invoke Hitchcock’s spirit, combined with his love of classic film noir and Val Lewton’s atmospheric slow-burn horrors.

Starring in Black Chariot is none other than Laurence R. Harvey of The Human Centipede series, in an intense dramatic role that may evoke comparisons with Peter Lorre’s notorious child-killer in Fritz Lang’s M (1931).

In Black Chariot, Harvey plays a ruthless manipulator who coerces three young men—Hex Studio newcomers Novarro Ramon, Dorian Todd, and Sam Barclay—into carrying out the perfect crime: stealing a valuable red briefcase whose mysterious contents drive our characters to a dark meeting place. Here, they encounter a spine-tingling figure known as ‘The Devil,’ played by Richard Pate, along with two vicious private detectives played by Nick Ford and Marco Rinaldi.

Megan Tremethick, the rising horror star and key player in this film, commented, “I felt irresistibly drawn to Black Chariot… by its ethereal and uncanny storyline, which felt so, so reminiscent of the heart and spirit of Carnival of Souls, one of the most haunting films I’ve ever seen.” Tremethick’s images from Black Chariot on Instagram caught the attention of renowned horror filmmaker James Wan, who sent a personal message wishing the team good luck.

Producer Sarah Daly added, “With Black Chariot, we’re pushing the boundaries of indie horror and the genre. Our films and storytelling defy trends and pop culture norms. We are unapologetic in our love for past cinema, and we aim to champion and resurrect a style of genre filmmaking that is timeless and will be enjoyed for years to come.”

The enigmatic Novarro Ramon, who intriguingly lives his life as the imagined reincarnation of silent era star Ramon Novarro, stated, “Black Chariot is more than a film for me; it’s a spiritual journey through time, merging the silent era’s mystique with modern-day horror.”

In Black Chariot, the gang’s crime and ensuing tragedy culminate in the release of supernatural forces, forcing the criminals and a beautiful hostage in their charge, played by Megan Tremethick (aka Miss Amicus), into a battle for survival against an unlikely foe. As night falls, they must evade the red headlights of a black Wolseley 15/50 that moves silently through the dark. But that is the least of their problems, for this black chariot does not drive itself alone—within travels a figure of nightmares, dressed in white and moving silently through the shadows.

Shot in beautiful black and white, Black Chariot ushers in a new era in Hex Studios’ lineup of retro-inspired horror films. This follows the wake of sister company Amicus Productions’ record-breaking crowdfunding campaign and Megan Tremethick’s groundbreaking campaign for Spoiling You, which raised the most funds for a horror film directed by a woman.

The success behind these films is firmly rooted in the companies’ unabashed rejection of mainstream film and their embrace of boutique filmmaking and niche audiences within the horror sphere. Drawing inspiration from iconic films like ‘Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors’ (1965), ‘Tales from the Crypt’ (1972), and ‘Asylum’ (1972), the new portmanteau feature will spotlight four tales rooted in the works of revered authors such as H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, and E.F Benson. With a central theme of medical macabre, the film promises to be a chilling experience. While the full cast list is under wraps, it will feature UK horror stalwarts like Laurence R. Harvey (Human Centipede II) and emerging stars Megan Tremethick (Ghost Crew) Jonathan Hansler (The Devil’s Machine) and Michael Daviot (Revenge of Innsmouth).

Guiding the ambitious resurrection is the new president of Amicus Productions, Lawrie Brewster, known for ‘The Unkindness of Ravens’ (2016), ‘The Devil’s Machine’ (2019), and ‘Ghost Crew’ (2022). Alongside him is his business partner, writer/producer Sarah Daly. Their efforts come after extensive dialogues and collaboration with the family of Amicus founder Milton Subotsky, who have wholeheartedly endorsed this venture.

But the aspirations of Brewster and team stretch beyond a single film. They are calling upon classic horror aficionados to be part of this cinematic rebirth. A crowdfunding campaign, set to kick off in mid-September, will facilitate the initial stages of the project, driving set construction, original practical effects creation, and talent acquisition. Brewster also delved into the deep-rooted involvement of the Subotsky family in the project. “The title ‘In the Grip of Terror’ was generously shared with me by Sergei Subotsky, derived from a list of potential titles his late father, Milton Subotsky, had curated decades ago. It feels profoundly fitting that we’re expanding upon the imaginative groundwork set by such a visionary. What’s even more fascinating is that three of the four stories we’re adapting were suggested by Milton’s widow and Sergei’s mother, Dr. Fiona Subotsky.’”
