An enigmatic stranger (Nicolas Cage) is driving through Texas when he gets a blow-out on all four tires, courtesy of a conveniently placed police stinger.

He is towed into town but finds himself unable to pay for repairs. That’s when he is offered a deal that seems too good to be true. If he spends the night cleaning the long-abandoned ‘Willy’s Wonderland’ restaurant on the outskirts of town, in preparation for its grand reopening, not only will he get his car fixed, but also earn himself a thousand dollars for his trouble.

Of course, what no-one bothers to mention is that the restaurant was formerly owned by paedophilic devil worshipers and was closed down following a massacre and subsequent police shoot out. Since then the good towns folk, led by the corrupt Sheriff Lund (Beth Grant – Donnie Darko, 2001) have been secretly sacrificing trouble makers and wayward strangers to the demonically possessed animatronic puppets that still inhabit the abandoned restaurant.

If all this sounds strangely familiar, it’s because the plot of the film follows that of the ‘Five Night’s at Freddy’s’ game franchise (a film adaptation of which is currently in development) so closely that it is a miracle that no lawsuits were filed.

Back to the action and the films body count is increased courtesy of the Sheriff’s willful daughter, Liv (Emily Tosta – Party of Five, 2020), who talks her friends into staging an ill-conceived rescue attempt in order to prevent further meaningless deaths.

Naturally, what none of the major players have counted on, is that this particular stranger, armed with a carrier bag full of energy drinks and a bad attitude, isn’t about to let some killer cuddly toys get in the way of his getting the job done.

Whenever I hear the words ‘Nicolas Cage’ and ‘Horror Film’ used in the same sentence, I am filled with an emotion that is equal parts dread and anticipation. His previous work in the genre is patchy, to say the least. Mention scenery chewing turkeys such as Drive Angry (2011), or even worse The Wicker Man (2006) and you are likely to set the teeth of any horror fan on edge.

However, more recent efforts such as Mandy (2018) and The Color out of Space (2019), have been met with much more positive reviews.

It was with all this in mind, and with little to no expectations, that I sat down to watch Willy’s Wonderland. To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be something of an understatement.

Nicolas Cage is perfectly cast as the un-named stranger; effortlessly flipping from passive caretaker to psychotic killing machine and back in the blink of an eye. The rest of the cast, whilst clearly only present to increase the onscreen carnage, do a surprisingly good job of fleshing out their one-dimensional cliche characters. There is very little plot to speak of, but if you can get past that and just go with it, this is a fun ride that doesn’t outstay its welcome.

This film will appeal to fans of 80’s horror or no-brainer splatter fests. Those who demand more from their horror films, like character development or plot twists had best avoid.

Described by legendary actor Nicolas Cage as ‘the wildest movie I’ve ever made’ PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND is a high-octane, post-apocalyptic tale of redemption and uprising that marks celebrated Japanese director Sion Sono’s first English-language film.

In the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town, a ruthless bank robber (Nicolas Cage) is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor (Bill Moseley), whose adopted granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella) has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within five days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman— and his own path to redemption.

The rollercoaster adventure of PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND alludes to serious themes including the ugly spectre of 80’s atomic power but never takes itself too seriously. Embracing this marriage of the profound and the absurd, the eclectic and irreverent Japanese director Sion Sono proved the perfect collaborator. Henry and Safai recall “When Sion came onto the film, the influence of his experience, artistry, and culture pumped psychedelic steroids into each of these early notions that gave birth to the initial script.”

Director Sion Sono, one of the most distinctive and universally celebrated Japanese auteurs, is known for films that range from social dramas to wild, uncompromising, uninhibited cinema. Dubbed by The Hollywood Reporter as “the most subversive filmmaker working in Japanese cinema today”, his films are always pushing boundaries and constantly surprising. He has directed over 50 feature films including Love Exposure (winner of the Caligari Film Award and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival); Himizu (winner of the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the 68th Venice International Film Festival); and the action-drama Why Don’t You Play in Hell? (winner of the People’s Choice Award in the Midnight Madness section at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival). Explaining his approach to PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND, his feature English-language film, Sono comments “Using the classic storytelling of actions films, I created the ‘East meets West’ world that doesn’t exist anywhere else. What I wanted to create is distortions of the modern society and its irrationalities making real of the unreal world.”

It was perhaps only a matter of time before Sono found his way to collaborate with kindred spirit and cult icon Nicolas Cage, an actor whose remarkable versatility has led to great success across all genres for over three decades. Cage’s recent work includes the critically acclaimed story of a truffle-hunter Pig, his award-winning, groundbreaking performance in the horror/thriller Mandy, the critically acclaimed Color Out of Space, and the voice of Spider Noir in the Academy Award-winning Best Animated Feature Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.

During his early career, Cage starred in a variety of classic films including Valley Girl (1983), Racing with the Moon (1984), Birdy (1984), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Raising Arizona (1987), Moonstruck (1987), Vampire’s Kiss (1989), Wild at Heart (1990), Fire Birds (1990), Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), and Red Rock West (1993). Cage received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actor’s Guild Award for his performance as a suicidal alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas (1995) before coming to the attention of worldwide audiences with mainstream blockbusters such as The Rock (1996), Face/Off (1997), Con Air (1997), City of Angels (1998), National Treasure 1 and 2 (2004, 2007) and Lord of War (2005). He earned his second Academy Award nomination for his performance as Charlie and Donald Kaufman in Adaptation (2002). He also directed the film Sonny (2002), for which he was nominated for the Grand Special Prize at The Deauville Film Festival. Cage has also been prolific as a producer, with films such as Shadow of The Vampire (2000) and The Life of David Gale (2003).

Sofia Boutella is an acclaimed actor who recently starred in Amazon Prime’s Modern Love, in Fahrenheit 451 opposite Michael B Jordan and Michael Shannon and in Gaspar Noe’s Climax. In addition, Sofia starred opposite Jodie Foster and Jeff Goldblum in Hotel Artemis and in Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, co-starring opposite Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe. She also starred in the action-thriller Atomic Blonde opposite Charlize Theron and James McAvoy. Previously, Sofia was seen in Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond and in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. An internationally acclaimed dancer, Sofia starred in a series of iconic Nike ads choreographed by renowned creative director Jamie King showcasing her street dancing skills. In 2006, she went on to win the World Championship Hip Hop Battle with her group, The Vagabond Crew. From there, Sofia became a breakout star in the dance world and was invited to dance on tour with Madonna. She was also cast as the main character in the video of Michael Jackson’s ‘Hollywood Tonight’.

PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND is the third theatrical release from Elysian Film Group, the newly established UK distribution company headed up by CEO Danny Perkins. Also on the slate for 2021 is Elysian’s first UK production currently in development GREATEST DAYS, a feel-good film based on the stage musical The Band which features 16 hit songs from UK boy-band, Take That. www.elysianfilmgroup.com
