The original ‘Poltergeist’ was a no-holds-barred scare-fest for children ‘and’ adults alike, and was deservedly certified a 15 by the BBFC (and this was when the ratings systems were far less lenient than they are these days). However, it’s no surprise – given the trend of taking adult themed 80s movies, and giving them a more kid-friendly rating – that the new ‘Poltergeist’ reboot is going to be a PG-type kids’ film. Star Sam Rockwell spoke with Collider and offered a little more insight into the paranormal reboot of the Steven Spielberg classic:
“The 10-year-old boy is really the protagonist this time. JoBeth Williams was the protagonist for the most part in the first one and now the kid, it’s really through his point-of-view. So it’s more of a kids’ movie. So I don’t know if it’s gonna be like rated-R scary.”
Rockwell elaborated, “It’s not like Conjuring type of scary. It’s a different kind of movie. It’s more of an adventure. It’s essentially a child abduction film when you come down to it. I mean, the original Poltergeist is too.”
Filming has wrapped on the reboot of the classic supernatural movie, and the studio are planning to release it on July 24th (bit of a weird release date for a horror movie, …but if it’s marketed as a kids adventure then that’s another story…)
Starring alongside Rockwell will be Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris and Nicholas Braun. Gil Kenan took on directing duties.
