Mandt VR have released an original scripted horror series called ‘The Depths’ and you can check out the 360 trailer that goes with it. Produced by Studio Clever Fox and created by Dekker Dreyer, The Depths is a rough-hewn character-driven creature feature in the tradition of The Thing and Near Dark. The Depths is available for streaming on Facebook and youtube at Mandt VR’s channel and on all major VR headsets including Play Station VR via Mandt VR’s via Littlstar.
Set in 1994, the commercial fishing vessel Wanderlust is lost at sea. Its last known communication was a distress call with only two words… “they’re everywhere”. Three survivors awake to find themselves adrift in the Arctic with a mysterious creature stalking them. They’ll need to trust each other if they hope to get out alive.
The production, filmed largely in a water tank spanning multiple interior ship sets, was demanding for the cast and crew, but ultimately gives the series an authentic sense of claustrophobic fear.
“I wanted the audience to feel trapped with these characters. This whole series is about isolation. That’s why I set it in the early 90s so we could escape the internet and satellite phones and other ways for the crew to escape what was right in front of them. They’re in these tiny, dark, spaces facing an unknown terror, nature, and themselves. When you watch the show in a VR headset you never escape this eerie feeling of cold,” says director Dekker Dreyer.
Darkness is also its own character in the series. “The darkness plays a major role. You’re always guessing about where things are and what might be out there. It feels more organic and adds another level to the reality of the show. The entire series feels like you’re living inside some kind of archival CCTV footage come to life, it’s very intense, ” says producer and art director Julia Howe.
The Depths is the first scripted series released from Clever Fox and distributed with Mandt VR. Clever Fox is in various stages of production on additional shows including the previously announced science fiction anthology “Broadcast”.
