DAWN OF THE DEAD TO ROCK
The creators behind next spring’s Dawn of the Dead remake are ringing the dinner bell for industry composers and musicians.
I hope you weren’t expecting the funkified, but memorable, beats of Goblin to permeate through Zack Snyder’s 2004 re-imaginging of George Romero’s second entry in the beloved Dead trilogy. The following is a ‘help wanted’ ad of sorts that the Corner received and was recently issued to industry composers and musicians. Read on, you can practically hear the cash register till dinging in the distance…
‘Music Supervisor seeking various songs for major studio action/horror film starring Ving Rhames and Sarah Polley. Picture is about ravenous, flesh-eating zombies that take over the world, hunting prey. An apocalyptic, action-packed ride.
The music can cover a wide range: smart & ironic, frightening, kitschy – anything that can fit within the classic horror paradigm. Need songs that deal with death, darkness, destruction and impending doom. Feel free to pitch songs that go against type, or that could be humorous in context, i.e., old catalog tracks that are ridiculously ‘up.’
Examples of genres/artists:
The Misfits
Clash
Robert Johnson
Black Sabbath
Batmobile
The Cramps
Tiger Army
The Raveonettes
Nick Cave
Queens of the Stone Age
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Tom Waits
Johnny Cash
Siouxsie & the Banshees
Joy Division
The Damned’
Not a bad list of examples, right? It’s odd that Universal isn’t going to shell out a few bucks for some original songs from these artists but perhaps the studio tightened their belt on the budget and put the money into the actual film. Regardless, looking at this list you immediately get the gist that they’re going for a Return of the Living Dead vibe, and that gives use a warm feeling in the pit of our stomachs.
