A sequel to the 2009 Marcus Nispel helmed horror remake ‘Friday the 13th’ has been on the cards for years now. Sadly through various ‘rights’ issues this has hindered the potential sequel’s progress. However, now according to the Hollywood Reporter studio giant Warner Bros have given up their rights to the franchise in order to hop aboard Paramount’s ‘Interstellar’ project from Christopher Nolan (‘The Dark Knight’). Now with the rights back in Paramount’s possession a sequel will likely be bumped up almost immediately. The 2009 version starred Jared Padalecki (‘Supernatural’), Danielle Panabaker (‘The Ward’), Amanda Righetti (‘The Mentalist’) and Derek Mears (‘Hatchet III’) donning the iconic hockey mask as Jason Vorhees.
New Line Cinema acquired the rights to the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise in the 90’s so they could begin working on the less than successful horror icon team-up ‘Freddy vs Jason’. When the reboot began production not only did it turn out that Paramount still had certain rights to the original and had to be bought in on the production but New Line were bought up by Warner Bros leading to a Warner/Paramount project partnership. The project was produced Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and went on to gross $91 million.
