2 NEW ASIAN HORRORS
Back in 2000, two movies were released in Japan that caused waves in the horror community that are still going strong today. Their names were Battle Royale and Versus. This weekend, KFC Cinema got the scoop on two new films that were related to those favorites that fans of Asian horror have been waiting a long time for.
First up is, of course, Battle Royale II, helmed at first by the director of the original (Kinji Fukasaku) then taken over by his son when he passed away. Though it hasn’t gotten the nicest reviews overseas, the sequel is still something I feel I need to see in order to have completion. So good for those like me, the DVD has been announced with a Japanese release date of December 21st, 2003. The only troubling thing about this disc is that, as of right now, it will not feature any English subs, making it quite difficult to understand by those of us that are not familiar with language…
Two versions will be released, a regular edition and a two-disc Special Limited Edition that will come in a very cool case and feature tons of as-yet unspecified extras none of which, assuredly, will be subbed in English.
The next cool-ass film set for release is Alive, Ryuhei Kitamura’s follow-up to Versus. The film features both leads from Versus as prisoners who are stuck in a cell together for life, choosing that over execution, and it’s based on the very popular comic book by Tsutomu Takahahshi. Supposedly it’s very ‘nightmarish’ and over-the-top, exactly what one would expect from Kitumara.
The DVD will hit on October 24th, and it’ll be a 3-disc special edition. Disc One will be the film itself, Disc Two is a longer version (presumably a ‘director’s cut’) plus featurettes and other goodies, and Disc Three will be the soundtrack featuring 19 songs. No word on whether or not this one will be subbed, but here’s hoping.
