WEINSTEIN AND BAY ON AMITYVILLE
Even though they each have separate Amityville Horror projects in their own respective ovens, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and Bob Weinstein’s Dimension Films are forming a partnership that’ll guide them through the wonderful world of develop for the next three years.
In the prehistoric days of Dimension, Weinstein specifically formed the company to deliver on ambitious, cost-effective genre projects, thus, flicks like The Crow, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Scream were born. Over the last few years they’ve digressed from their original modus operandi, however it seems to have been adapted by Bay’s Platinum Dunes which has one successful Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake under their belt, a Steve Niles project called Hyde on the horizon, and an Amityville remake in the works with MGM.
The pairing of the two companies will ensure that Dimension will develop any Platinum projects that may exceed a price tag of $15 million for the first year, meanwhile, Radar Pictures will continue its own relationship with Platinum, working on the smaller-budget flicks, for the final year of their deal.
So, what about the sinister Amityville house that stands between Bay and Weinstein?
‘We agreed that I didn’t want to give up my project and Michael didn’t want to give up his,’ Weinstein fesses up to Variety. ‘I understand that he and I would like there to be one movie, but if there is not going to be one movie, our deal provides us with the opportunity to make our movie, which we’ll make first. He can continue to make his movie with MGM if he likes.’
There’s no word yet on what project Platinum and Dimension will tackle first.
