RAVEN FLIES AT CROSSGEN
Although the source material was conceived by a fella you might be familiar with (a Mr. E.A. Poe), Roger Corman, in the 1960s, injected the cinematic arm of our beloved genre with a pair of gleefully grim and brooding tales. Each was set in some lavish estate, their ominous exteriors setting the stage for the sinister doings taking place within their halls. I speak of Fall of the House of Usher and Pit and the Pendulum, of course, films where the gothic atmosphere was brilliantly matched by characters burdened by dark secrets and wicked, mad, and sometimes tragic, motivations. (The Others, Dark Shadows, and even Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca – that’s a stretch – could even be clumped into this subgenre, if you’d like.)
Chuck Dixon and Leonardo Marco aim to capture that same vibe in CrossGen’s upcoming comic series Raven House. Amidst a market of horror comics laced with demons, vampires, and any other nasty creatures you can think of, the horror in Raven will be very much human. The story concerns a young woman who is called to the Dalamar mansion to serve as a tutor to Dalamar’s son. To use a tired clichonce she arrives the mansion’s secrets begin to peel away like the layers of an onion. Were Dixon and Marco influenced by the aforementioned Poe/Corman flicks? You bet your ass they were. CrossGen opens the doors to Raven House with a six-issue series beginning this June. It might be a breath of fresh air for horror comic fans…
