    No More Freddy & Daphne?

    NO MORE FREDDY & DAPHNE?

CHUD caught up with the cast of ‘Scooby Doo 2 : Monsters Unleashed’ and discovered that two of the gang – Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr – aren’t signed for a third film.

‘I have signed for a third. Not everyone has signed for a third, but I’ve signed for a third. It all comes down to how it does opening weekend’, says Matthew Lillard. Linda Cardellini has also signed apparently.

Lillard is mulling over where he’d like to see Shaggy go in the second sequel. ‘Well, I got the girl in the first one, I saved the day in the second one…’

Villain perhaps? ‘Hmm…interesting. No, not really. I think what we learned in the first one and what we brought to the second one is it’s about the gang. In the first movie, they all split up in the first five minutes and that takes place on a desert island in the middle of daylight. Just by virtue of what Scooby is, both those things were kind of misses. I hope if we’re lucky enough to do a third one, that it will go back and maintain some of the same storylines that Scooby-Doo maintained. I love the fact that the movie has something to say. I like doing family films. As a father, I appreciate them.’

So what’s going to happen with Freddie and Sarah’s parts? ‘I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen to tell you the truth. I’d rather not do it without [our] Fred and Daphne, but I have no idea. It’s kind of a really interesting subject right now around Scooby-land.’

Producer Chuck Roven adds, ‘There’s definitely not an issue. The reality is this. We have individuals who all had their own particular career goals and career desires at the time we started to make the deal for Scooby 2, which would obviously – when you’re making the deal for Scooby 2 – even if you’re not guaranteeing there’s going to be a Scooby 3, you’re going to want to talk about it. Matthew and Linda were very, very enthusiastic about where their characters have come from and where they’re going and were more positive about seeing that far into the future and being able to say, ‘Hey, you know what? We don’t care what we’re going to be doing. We’re ready to go.’ I think that Freddie and Sarah were a little bit more cautious about that. Sarah was just coming to the end of Buffy and I think that she realized what, in fact, the future held out for her, so I think she just wanted to be a bit more cautious about making a longer term commitment out and in the future. And Freddie, he goes back and forth about how much longer he wants to stay acting – whether he wants to move into other areas of the entertainment business as a writer or a director and I don’t think that he wanted to make that kind of a long-term commitment because he also didn’t know where his career was taking him.’
