Behind the walls dripping with blood, the windows covered with flies, and the infamous red room, there awaits a tangled mess of story rights and other legalities more terrifying and headache-inducing than what the Lutz family experienced.
MGM, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, and Dimension Films are the three brave companies, at the moment, jumping headlong into the Amityville Horror mess to bring audiences a remake in January 2005. This much we know is true: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Scott Kosar is penning the script, but due to those two words us Internet ghouls hate to hear – ‘confidentiality agreement’ – Kosar can’t divulge any details.
That isn’t stopping George from speaking out about the upcoming film. The Lutz patriarch who owns ‘the sequel rights for the Amityville Horror for everything after and before the 28 days that are contained in the original book’ recently chatted with Entertainment Rewired – mostly about the limitations the triumvirate of studios involved with the project are up against, but it’s a solid read. Here Lutz talks about what guidelines screenwriter Kosar may have be adhere to…
‘If they do have the right to do this, then theyre limited to the 28 days and to the wording in the book. The original screenplay limits them as such so that theyre options to retell the story become pretty much line-by-line of the original. In other words, they have a very narrow definition of what they can do.’
