HELLBOY SEQUEL STATUS
Counting Down have provided an onslaught of Hellboy sequel related news today. Read on:
Many HellFans new and old wondered if this weekend’s $23.5 million box office take would be enough to get Sony and Revolution Studios behind another go ’round with Big Red in ‘Hellboy 2’, and according to Hellboy himself, the monster hunting escapades will indeed continue! ‘We got the news this morning, and God willing, [Guillermo del Toro] writes a decent script, BOOM.’ Doesn’t get any more straightforward than that! del Toro has yet to respond to Perlman’s comments on the official message board, but may soon pop up to confirm them.
That article was then followed by an interview with Ron Perlman at About.com at the premiere of ‘The Whole Ten Yards’:
Q: Has the studio given you any type of gift to thank you for your participation?
A: They gave me the gift that keeps on giving – it’s called ‘Hellboy 2.’
Q: What is the latest on that?
A: On Monday morning (April 5, 2004) I awoke to the news that ‘Hellboy 2’ was going to be greenlit.
Q: What can happen in ‘Hellboy 2?’
A: Everything that didn’t happen in ‘Hellboy 1,’ and maybe a couple of things that did.
Q: Are there specific villains out there you’d like to see introduced? Who are some of your favorites?
A: He comes from Hell and we haven’t quite seen him there yet. So, who knows? I mean, Mike Mignola has provided us with chapters and chapters of possibilities in the comic book. I’ll be the first one online to find out.
Q: And will Guillermo del Toro and Selma Blair be returning as well?
A: Guillermo is key. I don’t know anything beyond that. Selma, I would love to see. I would love to see everybody back. I’d love to see John Hurt back.
Q: Have you heard that he may go to Hell?
A: I don’t know. I don’t know what Guillermo has got up his sleeves. I have faith – I know him – he’s going to try to top this.
Q: When do you start filming ‘Hellboy 2?’
A: Well they still have to write it so it’s going to be a while.
Q: Have they said anything about filming it next year and releasing it in 2006?
A: They better hurry because I’m getting old (laughing).
Hang around guys, there’s more. Because according to the film’s director Guillermo del Toro on the movie’s official message boards it does look like ‘Hellboy’ has done well enough to merit a second outing. Here are some clips from the man himself regarding the various spin-offs from the film (TV, video games, etc) as well as the sequel:
-‘We are in talks with Gonzo Anime for the HELLBOY anime series and we are shopping for the best possible videogame publishers…and possible engines. Mike Mignola and I will be involved inthe plotting of it to make sure that in flows with the mythology of the movie (s) anime, comic, etc, etc’
-‘Mezco Toys is prepping a SECOND WAVE Hellboy Toys. I know that they’re planning a bitchin’ NAZI KROENEN and a full-blown PRINCE OF DARKNESS HELLBOY standing over the city rubble. I would like to propose this… Make a poll as to your favorite action figure and I PROMISE I’ll fight to get it made in the *’ version, how is that???’ (Head on over to the message boards at the link below to add your vote).
-‘And, yes, we are talking about a second movie. The B.O. numbers make perfect sense since we were a relatrively ‘inexpensive’ movie at under $70 million and we will make enough domestically. Mike and I are fleshing out ideas and storylines we’ve been discussing for some time now. Mike thinks there will be no [Lobster Johnson] -sob- but [Roger the Homunculus] is in for sure. Some of the plotting will have hints of ALMOST COLOSSUS and [CONQUEROR WORM].’
