    GUNN TALKS SCOOBY & DAWN

James Gunn has let MovieHole know that he’s spoken out on his official site about why he’s not doing the next ‘Dawn of the Dead’ or ‘Scooby Doo’ sequels.

He says ‘People are writing in and asking me about DAWN OF THE DEAD 2 (or whatever it will be called), and SCOOBY-DOO 3. I’ve had discussions about writing both films, but I’m not going to do either, at least for the time being. The success of DAWN and the SCOOBY movies has given me a lot of freedom, and a lot of opportunity. I’m taking that opportunity to create the types of movies that I want to see, that I think a lot of us want to see, but just aren’t out there. I hope all of you will come along for the ride.’

In addition, Matthew Lillard told Sci Fi Wire that he’s also not returning for a third ‘Scooby’, saying instead though that he doesn’t think there will be one.

Anyway back to Gunn. On his site, he also announced what he’s doing next.

‘The first is SUPER, a dark superhero tale about a guy with no powers who puts on a costume and goes out to avenge himself after his wife leaves him for a drug dealer. SUPER may be my favorite script I’ve ever written. For those TOY COLLECTOR fans, it’s closer to that tonally than other screenplays I’ve done – it’s a mixture of drama, black comedy, and fantasy. We’re in the process of trying to cast the male lead, a character named Frank D’Arbo; if the producers (Chuck Roven and Alex Gartner), the financiers, and I can all agree upon an actor – an actor who’s willing to do the role – than we’ll be filming very soon. Being that I am a picky motherfucker when it comes to actors, this is not necessarily an easy task. There are not many ‘brand name’ stars out there who have the kind of range we’re looking for. Still, I’m very hopeful and excited about the movie, and I can’t wait to dive in.

The second movie I’ve been working on is a horror film called SLITHER. It’s the story of an alien plague with a consciousness that takes over the inhabitants of a small town in Virginia. I’m done with the first draft, and it’s coming along. SLITHER is more like the films of David Cronenberg than anything else, but it also harkens back to the over-the-top horror films of the ’80’s and early ’90’s ‘￿ everything from RE-ANIMATOR to BASKETCASE to DEAD-ALIVE. I think it’s a pretty unique script, and I’m excited about it just like I am SUPER. It’s a kind of horror film I feel thirsty for that I haven’t seen in a long time.’
