    SCRIPTER TALKS FRANKENSTEIN

Screenwriter Mark Kruger￿no stranger to horror franchises, with credits including CANDYMAN: FAREWELL TO THE FLESH and a currently-in-development BLADE animated series￿tackled his biggest genre name yet with the Hallmark Channel￿s upcoming FRANKENSTEIN. The two-part movie, premiering October 5-6, directed by Kevin (MOTEL HELL) Connor and starring Alec (DUNE) Newman and Luke (BLADE II) Goss, was a daunting challenge for the writer, but an experience he enjoyed. ￿In rereading Mary Shelley￿s novel￿I had read it several times over the years￿I was struck by how much she had left out of the story,￿ Kruger says. ￿There￿s so much that is implied, and events that happen offscreen, that we don￿t see but are told about. It￿s a lot of people telling [things to] people. It￿s Victor recounting his story to Walton, it￿s the monster recounting his story to Victor. There￿s a great structure in the book, but the challenge for me was constructing full-blooded characters. And taking elements we￿ve seen a million times before in every Frankenstein movie, and hopefully giving it maybe a bit of a different spin, so that I￿m not doing what￿s already been done.

￿Kevin Connor was really faithful to my script,￿ Kruger continues, ￿and took it upon himself to protect it and everything that was important in it, that we felt was important storywise and emotionally. So for better or for worse, I can say that they shot my script. You hear lots of people say, ￿Oh, I blame the director.￿ But I￿m really thrilled. It was a wonderful experience, and I feel very fortunate.￿ See FANGORIA #237, on sale this month, for a FRANKENSTEIN set visit.
