WANNA MAKE OTHERS SCARED!?
Aspiring horror-comic illustrators will want to check out SCARED! HOW TO DRAW FANTASTIC HORROR COMIC CHARACTERS by Steve Miller and Bryan Baugh, recently published by Watson-Guptill Publications. The book provides step-by-step instructions on how to draw all the usual suspects (werewolves, witches, vampires, old dark houses) and more, some composed by such noted artists as Arthur (Dark Horses CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) Adams and Bernie (SWAMP THING) Wrightson.
The book also includes a short but informative history of the horror genre (comics, literature and films) intended to help young artists seek inspiration. The nicely illustrated chapter covers everything from the publication of Horace Walpoles THE CASTLE OF OTRANTO (the first Gothic novel) in 1765 to the birth of EC Comics horror division in 1950 to the resurgence of the horror comic in the mid-90s, beginning with the release of HELLBOY: SEED OF DESTRUCTION. Finally, there are interviews with acclaimed comic book artist Vincent (DEADWOOD) Locke and two editors from Top Cow Comics (publishers of WITCHBLADE). The editors answers to questions such as ‘What are some of the common weaknesses you see in portfolios?’ ought to be of interest to any comic artist just starting out.
SCARED! purposely doesnt tell its readers how to develop a particular style. It should, however, help them to develop their own. It is currently available in bookshops and on-line stores for a suggested retail price of $19.95.
