There’s a very cool article in this morning’s Hollywood Reporter that we think you should all take a look at.
The gist of the article is that horror might be winding down yet again as we see less and less people going to the cinema to get scared, at least during this season. In the span of 11 weeks, 5 horror films were released and not a single one of them were considered “successful” (so it wasn’t just Land of the Dead that underperformed at the box office), which is causing studios to take a serious look at their roster of upcoming horror flicks.
The flood is set to continue, but if what this article points out is a common truth, that horror films just don’t do well in the spring/summer category because everyone’s out seeing the big-budget summer movies with massive promotional blitzes behind them, we won’t see any successful horror flicks until late September.
So what happens if horror does continue to go south? David Tuckerman of New Line has the right idea; “Hopefully the film companies are going to burn out on it and then there’ll be room for good ones again.”
