While we’re sure executive producer Frank Spotnitz’s heart is in the right place, I don’t think this was the best way to pay tribute to someone.
Sci Fi Wire talked to Spotnitz recently about the upcoming re-vamped “Night Stalker” show, an updated take on the much-loved “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” series. Spotnitz says that, since he loved Darren McGavin’s role in the original so much, he just had to include him in the new series.
“It was not cheap to do, but it was very important to me to do that because I loved him…So we went and we looked at every shot at him in the original “Night Stalker” movie. And we looked for shots that were lit and could be framed properly to insert into the newsroom, and got the negative out of a vault and digitized it and put it in there.”
Yep, you’re reading it right, McGavin will be digitally inserted into the new “Night Stalker” show, in which Stuart Townsend (Queen of the Damned) takes on McGavin’s role.
Spotnitz says there will be other “tributes” to the original show in the new series, but is reluctant to give them all away. “Night Stalker” premieres Thursday, September 29th at 9pm on ABC. More info and some clips are available on ABC’s website.
