In an update on David Fincher’s ZODIAC, star Jake Gyllenhaal of DONNIE DARKO tells MTV.com that the director is “going pretty dark with this one.” Scripted by James (DARKNESS FALLS) Vanderbilt and based on the true-crime books ZODIAC and ZODIAC UNMASKED by Robert Graysmith, ZODIAC revolves around the investigation of the self-nicknamed serial killer, who terrorized San Francisco during the ’60s and ’70s. Gyllenhaal plays San Francisco Chronicle reporter Graysmith, who became drawn into the case after receiving taunting letters from the murderer.
Currently filming on location in San Francisco, the movie also stars Robert Downey, Jr. (as one of Graysmith’s fellow reporters), Mark Ruffalo (as a homicide detective), Chloe (AMERICAN PSYCHO) Sevigny and Bijou (VENOM) Phillips. Says Gyllenhaal of Fincher’s unique vision (nothing new for the director of SE7EN and FIGHT CLUB), “He’s doing stuff on this film that I’ve never seen done before. Technically speaking, he’s extraordinary. He’s shooting on this Viper[digital video] camera, so we don’t have any slates or anything like that—we just blow through takes and start over again.”
Regarding the film’s tone, the actor elaborates on his “pretty dark” statement: “[Fincher has] done these murder scenes unlike any I’ve seen before. He’s true exactly to the inch or centimeter of what actually happened. So it’s going to look and feel exactly like it happened in real life. It’s going to be terrifying.” A joint Warner Bros./Paramount Pictures production, ZODIAC is slated for release in 2006.
