The Grindhouse Film Festival is adding some yuletide fear to the New Beverly Cinema’s schedule.
This month Grindhouse is presenting the double feature Silent Night, Deadly Night and Black Christmas on the big screen at the Beverly (7165 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles) Tuesday, December 20th.
Charles Sellier, Jr.’s Silent (released in ’84, ten years after Bob Clark’s Christmas) stars Lilyan Chauvin, Toni Nero and Gilmer McCormick. Arriving in the wake of seminal slasher faves like Halloween and Friday the 13th, Silent heavily cribbed from those films to tell the story of a dude who dresses up as Santa and goes on a killing spree. His loose wiring the result of having his parents murdered and being tortured by Mother Superior in an orphanage. Silent Night, Deadly Night screens at 7:30pm.
The film that you can arguably say inspired Carpenter’s Halloween, Black Christmas (1974), begins at 9:30pm. Olivier Hussey stars as a college student left alone with a few of her sorority sisters (including actress Margot Kidder) during the Christmas holiday. Unbeknownst to them, there’s a killer lurking in the attic. There’s a little John Saxon action thrown in as well. And you know we all love the Saxon.
Black Christmas is currently being remade by James Morgan and Glen Wong for Dimension Films.
As with any Grindhouse screening, the night will include a cult/exploitation trailer show, raffle…and the potential of a special guest or two. We’ll let you know if any announcements come our way!
