When Fango last caught up with Wes Craven, he was enjoying the fruits of THE HILLS HAVE EYES’ success under the direction of French filmmaker Alexandre (HIGH TENSION) Aja. Impressed by the young filmmaker’s stylistic abilities, Craven conveyed a fair share of satisfaction in looking overseas for up-and-coming talent to helm the remake of his 1977 classic, so it comes as no surprise that he’s doing the same for the redux of his LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT that has been waiting in the wings.
According to the website L’HEBDO CINEMA, directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud are in talks to helm the controversial remake. In Hollywood-speak, “in talks” is pretty loose terminology for “they could be interested, but nothing’s signed on the dotted line yet.” However, if true, this would mean some progress has been made on the project, as Craven felt—that significant rewrites needed to be done to scribe Mark Haslett’s existing draft.
Moreau and Palud, in case you’re unaware, have a horror effort on the way entitled ILS (THEM) which is set to make its theatrical debut in France July 19 from Mars Distribution and will subsequently be shown at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal. The story focuses on “Lucas and Clémentine, a 30something couple, who are expats in Romania. They live in an isolated house in the suburbs of Bucharest. Clémentine [played by Olivia Bonamy, pictured, the title star of BLOODY MALLORY], a French teacher, and Lucas, a novelist, live in peaceful happiness. However, one evening in their house, everything is turned upside down. Rain is beating outside. The telephone keeps ringing…distant voices at the end of the line…incomprehensible. The couple are not alone. The nightmare begins. THEY are there…”
Definitely sounds like one to watch out for! We’ll bring you more developments as they come in…
