Another remake! Another classic, this time the silent 1920 film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, is on its way.
IGN’s exclusive story comes as good news. This remake of Caligari and his sleepwalking slave Cesare will be done as an independent low budget production with Doug Jones as the somnambulist. Jones may not have a familiar face, but that is because it’s usually behind a mask. Doug has played Abe Sapien in Hellboy and has three other roles come up in the near future. He will be all shiny for his role as Silver Surfer in 2007’s Fantastic Four, and in just a few months you can see him as Pan in Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth.
According to Jones this remake feels like its heart is in the right place, and he let loose a good bit of info regarding the remake to IGN. “The entire thing is a visual effects movie because we used the original backdrops from the first Caligari,” says the actor. “[David Fisher] created matte shots off of the original film that we all acted on green screen in front of, so he’s [combining] us all together with the original film. In those old silent films there were lots of wide shots where the camera just sat still and everyone moved around in front of it kind of like in a play. Well, as people were moving around, he could get the information of the backdrop behind them as they moved, composite it all together as a matte shot with no people in it, put us on the green screen, and then marry the two later.”
