Variety reports that the new Halcyon Company has purchased the rights to the TERMINATOR franchise from Mario Kassar and Andrew Wajna’s C2 Pictures, with plans to make not one but three more installments in the dark science-fiction saga. First up will be TERMINATOR 4, from an existing screenplay by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, who also scripted TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES. It focuses on a 30something John Connor as he leads a human rebellion against the cyborgs that have taken over, and is intended to reinvent the series, introducing new characters and storylines.
“With T3, we included many incidental details and plot points that, along with the main narrative, set the stage for an entirely new set of interrelated stories covering the future adventures of John Connor and the Terminators,” Moritz Borman, who executive-produced T3 and will produce T4, tells the trade. “This new TERMINATOR trilogy will build upon the already huge worldwide Terminator fan base, which was both revitalized and expanded with the global success of T3.”
So far, no cast or director have been set, nor has a U.S. distributor, but plans are to have TERMINATOR 4 in theaters for summer 2009. It’s not clear whether original star Arnold Schwarzenegger will be involved, since he’ll still be serving as California’s Governator when the film goes into production. Halcyon’s deal also allows them to inherit C2’s financial participation in licensing the rights for THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, the Warner Bros./Fox TV series in which Lena (300) Headey takes the title role, Thomas (HEROES) Dekker plays John and Summer (FIREFLY) Glau has a key supporting role. David (X FILES) Nutter directed the pilot, and Robert Hall’s Almost Human company provides the makeup FX.
