As much as I loathe rumours, particularly if they get me dribbling with excitement only to smash my dreams into pieces days later, this one I just ache to be true. ‘Black Death’ director Christopher Smith is reportedly being ‘eyeballed’ to take on the recently vacated position, left by Mike White, to helm the adapted ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ – according to the folks over at Quiet Earth anyway. The adaption, based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, was set to star Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy to play both Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy respectively. Hopefully Hathaway will still be involved in spite of her recent Catwoman casting in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. Read more about Smith’s previous genre work below and remember everyone, it’s only a rumour – for now!
Brit director Smith is responsible for some great genre flicks to date including underground horror ‘Creep’, comedy survival horror ‘Severance’, intriguing horror/sci-fi movie ‘Triangle’ and of course the previously mentioned medieval horror tale ‘Black Death’. Which even though came out last June here in the UK will finally see the light of day in the US on VOD this February.
“‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ follows the plot of Pride and Prejudice, but places the novel in an alternative universe version of Regency-era England where zombies (and indeed skunks and chipmunks) roam the English countryside. Described as the “stricken”, “sorry stricken”, “undead”, “unmentionables”, or just “zombies”, the deceased ancestors of England are generally viewed by the characters as a troublesome, albeit deadly, nuisance. Their presence alters the original plot of the story in both subtle and significant ways.”
