Well we’re on a roll here for remake Friday it seems. Don’t even get me started again on the potential ‘American Psycho’ redo, instead let’s concentrate on another ‘whats-the-point’ makeover of sorts for the Michael Crichton helmed ‘Coma’. The 1978 sci-fi conspiracy thriller movie, which Crichton penned based on the original novel by Robin Cook, starred Michael Douglas and Geneviève Bujold and is set for a bit of a TV makeover as a two-night, four-hour miniseries for A&E. The one good thing about the show is that filmmaker siblings Tony Scott and Ridley Scott will be exec producing so it’ll definitely have some cache. But then with a cast featuring the likes of Lauren Ambrose (‘Six Feet Under’), Steven Pasquale (‘Rescue Me’), Richard Dreyfuss (‘Jaws’), Ellen Burstyn (‘Requiem For A Dream’), Geena Davis and James Woods (‘Videodrome’) I guess it’s not all bad at all. I do have my anti-remake hat on today so it’s not the best time for me to be reporting such news but I’m going to give this one the benefit of the doubt.
And here’s the rundown of the 1978 original:
“A young woman doctor discovers something sinister going on in her hospital. Relatively healthy patients are having ‘complications’ during simple operations and ending up in comas. The patients are then shipped off to an institute that looks after them. The young doctor suspects there is more to this than meets the eye.”
