KING’S DARK TOWER COMPLETE
That’s right folks, Stephen King himself told USA Today that the last three novels in The Dark Tower saga are complete! What’s the titles? Why did he start writing them in the first place and what’s with the new edition of the original novel? It was that horrible auto accident that got his butt in gear, he told the newspaper today that, his ‘close encounter with a Plymouth minivan … got me going again’ on the series’ last three books. They’re all done will be published over the next 17 months.
But as of now, you can pick up the revised edition of The Gunslinger, the original novel in the saga, it’s out Monday in hardcover if you want to check it out. In the revised edition, he changed or deleted words on nearly every page, added three scenes, about 35 pages’ worth, and cut false starts that went nowhere in the books that followed. King says the reason is he wanted to make the writing ‘smoother’ and eliminated ‘what seemed like thousands of unnecessary adverbs’ and other ‘hollow blather.’
The original version of The Gunslinger, he says, was the most difficult book for readers. He has told them that if they persevered, ‘they would find the story really found its voice in The Drawing of the Three,’ the second book, published in 1987.
The entire saga was originally inspired by The Lord Of The Rings of all things, as well as Sergion Leone’s ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’.
King wanted to write ‘a novel that contained Tolkien’s sense of quest and magic but set against Leone’s almost absurdly majestic Western backdrop.’
He wrote it with an excitment ‘that only a young person can muster’ King wanted to write ‘not just a long book but the longest popular novel in history. After the final three books are published, the series will total about 3,500 pages, ‘nothing to be ashamed of,’ King says. ‘Wolves of the Calla’ will be out in November, ‘Song of Susannah’ in summer 2004 and ‘The Dark Tower’ in November 2004.
Incidentally King is scheduled to be on NBC’s Today Monday and do more than a dozen other interviews, so keep a look out for him!
