    MORE CREEP DETAILS

Up until 1999 Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was quite the taboo thread of celluloid in the UK, then the BBFC (British Board of Film Censors) grew a pair of balls and deemed the uncut version of TCM ‘okay’ for public consumption. In an fitting turn, it’s actually TCM that serves as the inspiration of choice for UK filmmaker Chris Smith and his upcoming ‘tunnel terror’ flick Creep.

When Smith’s film was announced late last year – around the same time cameras had already begun rolling – we’ve been desperately trying to keep our finger on the pulse of this production. The plot synopsis, at the time, was bare bones: A young woman traveling late one night through the London subway (or tube) system falls asleep in a train car and awakes to find that the lights have gone out and the train has stopped. Instantly, upon reading this, shivers and memories of Gary Sherman’s Raw Meat crept through my brain. Creep sounded like a film to look forward to. Add to that, Franka Potente was leading the cast lineup.

On a random jaunt to the local Borders Bookstore the Creature Corner picked up a copy of SFX Magazine (Jan. 2004) and found a nice two-page spread on Creep. There were a few new pics, nothing too revealing, but, director Smith goes into further detail about the plot and his influences. TCM and the tunnel sequence from An American Werewolf in London were cited as key films that got his blood flowing and he calls Creep, ‘Bridget Jones meets Alien.’ Perhaps explaining the plot a bit more will help clear up his reference to the former film in that quote. According to the article, Potente plays a gal deep in the world of the modeling biz. On her way home she opts to take the subway. You know the rest: She falls asleep, wakes up, terror ensues. But a new revelation is that the title Creep actually refers to her pursuer who Smith calls ‘Creep.’ He (or ‘she’ or ‘it’) is a hideously deformed person whose visage, the filmmakers hope, will be withheld until the film opens. Creep also has a ‘lair.’ Teeming with rats, by the sounds of it.
