    No Scream 4 Says Conrad

    NO SCREAM 4 SAYS CONRAD

Despite constant rumors ranging from Neve Campbell ‘quotes’ saying she was signed up for a fourth movie to the registering of the ‘SCREAM 4-10’ website URL’s, franchise producer Cathy Konrad, who Fango talked to over the weekend, disputes the claim that a fourth SCREAM movie is right around the corner.

‘There’s not really a fourth one [in the works],’ says Konrad when asked about the Campbell rumors. ‘There might be a fourth one.’

Does that mean Konrad wouldn’t be involved should there be a fourth film? ‘No, I started it, so I’ll be there until the end,’ the producer jokes. ‘Why not? What am I going to do, [say] ‘No, I’m not!’ If the story’s good, I love a good story. When Kevin [Williamson] sold me the original script to SCREAM, he also told me the other two, and I knew in my head what they were going to be. He didn’t have them fully written, but he designed it as a trilogy in his mind. So, it always began and ended as one-two-three. That’s how I’ve always thought of it.’

A lot has been made of the website for Konrad’s upcoming horror film, IDENTITY, something that would’ve been fun for the SCREAM franchise, but wasn’t yet feasible. ‘We did have a website, but technology is funny￿everything changes so quickly,’ explains Konrad. ‘When we started the third one, there was such a hunger for ‘Who was the killer?’ People wanted information so bad on SCREAM. In a weird way, we spent more time doling out propaganda to keep people away from who the killer was than we did with having fun creating mood and nuance. There was a different fever attached to SCREAM. [IDENTITY] is so much about mood and texture and a different kind of fear than that movie.’

Konrad feels that SCREAM has had a lasting effect on how Hollywood perceives horror, and believes it has helped movies like IDENTITY get made. ‘I think it made people realize that there was a real audience out there that loved the ride, that loved the idea of this kind of film as a ride and people like to be afraid,’ Konrad enthuses. ‘You can be afraid and entertained at the same time. It’s not ‘beneath them’ to make those kinds of films. I loved them growing up. I love ride-movies, puzzle-movies, but they’re the hardest, I think, to make. You feel like everything’s recycled. You feel like you’ve seen everything before. That’s what I loved so much when I read the script for IDENTITY. I thought, ‘My God, here’s a great twist.’ ‘

IDENTITY, directed by James Mangold (Konrad’s husband), opens April 25th.
