Variety reports that Breck Eisner will take the reins of the long-mooted remake of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON for Universal. The son of former Disney topper Michael Eisner, the director cut his teeth on TV shows like Steven Spielberg’s TAKEN and Sci Fi’s THE INVISIBLE MAN before jumping to features with this year’s adventure film SAHARA. The long line of filmmakers who have flirted with the CREATURE redux has included John Landis (back in the ’80s!) and Guillermo del Toro. Eisner tells the trade, “As a kid, I remember loving Jack Arnold’s original version of this film. What I really want to do is update an iconic image from the ’50s and bring in more of the sci-fi sensibility of ALIEN or John Carpenter’s THE THING.”
The script is certainly in good hands; it was written by Oscar-nominated scribe Gary Ross, who is also producing. He’s the son of Arthur A. Ross, one of the scripters of the original film. The film will be shot in both the U.S. and either Central or South America next summer.
