Horror movies are supposed to be exactly that, horrifying. But sometimes the cast, crew, and fans get a little more horror than they paid, or were paid for. Here are some of the creepiest stories about some of the most famous horror movies of all time. Wait till you get to the last one, and then try fathom why anyone would want to make a remake or two.
Poltergeist, 1982
Poltergeist released in 1982 was just another terrifying piece of Spielberg genius. That was until the crew realised that they should have negotiated some danger pay. Set in the Freeling’s California home, abduction and demons follow, but they weren’t restricted to the set.
It is believed the Poltergeist series carries a curse responsible for the death of four of its cast members. The leading girl child, Heather O’Rourke passed away after a misdiagnosis, Dominique Dunne, who played Heathers older sister, was strangled to death.
Two other cast members died under less suspicious circumstances, but still let rise to many superstitions that the set was cursed.
The Exorcist, 1973
Totally creepy possessed kids aside, possibly one of the most iconic horror movies of all times. The making of the movie was just as creepy an experience as the watching. Jack MacGowran and Vasiliki Maliaros characters died in the movie, as did their actors while it was still in post-production.
Mercedes McCambridge, the voice of Pazuzu. Her son murdered her grandchildren, before he killed his wife and then himself. Pazuzu was thought to be the king of the demons, and the main demonic character in the movie. Could pretending to be Pazuzu actually have invited possession into the life of her family?
The Crow, 1994
More of a dark fantasy action film, the movie has some of the makings of a horror. Watching your fiancé being beaten and raped by thugs is pretty horrific.
As most of you know it was in this scene, that Brandon Bruce Lee was shot and mortally wounded with what should have been a blank round. They do say that you attract what you think; maybe all that murderous movie making just got to be too much and they should have spent some time thinking about playing real money pokies or going on vacation instead.
Passion of the Christ, 2004
Telling the story of the last hours of Jesus life. The Passion of the Christ movie was controversial from the get go. Most movie fans have ‘blasphemed’ or used an expression that equates to ‘May lighting strike me if I’m lying’.
Considered to be an act of God even by major insurance companies. Many believe that production of this movie was meant to be stopped, by God himself, when two of the members on set were struck by lightning.
The Omen, 1976
The son of Satan being raised with power and wealth, this movie is basically all death, murder, suicide and horrific accidents.
One would think that that would be enough, but the Omen continued to make history when the scriptwriter, David Seltzers, plane was struck by lightning (weren’t we just talking about this in Passion of the Christ?), as was Gregory Pecks and Mace Neufelds.
The hotel Neufeld was staying at, as well as the restaurant he and other cast members were supposed to eat at, was bombed. By the IRA.
But wait, there’s more!
John Richardson’s special effects assistant died in a car accident when he was driving, on Friday the thirteenth. They crashed right under a sign that read: Ommen, 66.6km. Not quite the road trip ending you’d expect.
Pecks son shot himself and died, and a plane, booked for use in the film, was rescheduled for a passenger flight. Yes, you guessed it, it crashed, and everyone died.
Worst omens ever? Absolutely!
