It’s hard to imagine Jason Vorhees without his iconic hockey mask. It’s even more difficult to think about just how many kills he has managed to notch up over the years whilst wearing it. There are endless examples in the movie world of sporting equipment being used in violent and even murderous ways. Not just in horror but sporting goods like a baseball bat or a golf club for instance have been used many times often in threatening situations. And some pieces of equipment in particular are the ideal accessories for unforgettable on-screen deaths moments in the horror world.
PROM NIGHT III: THE LAST KISS (1990)
Horror sequels, particularly in the 80’s, are not always met with particularly high expectations or any expectant stamp of quality. In fact, more often than not, the higher the number of the sequel the weaker the actual movie probably is. There were plenty of horror franchises kicking around in the late 80’s, unfortunately some of these efforts would often turn the true terror that we would expect to find in the genre into more cartoony and comical entertainment. ‘Prom Night III’ was a threequel that was overflowing with fairly unwelcome tongue-in-cheek-ness.
Partially pointless, partially lazy, the movie itself did manage to feature an unforgettable moment which sounds as bad as it actually was. Mary Lou, the murderous ghost, tries to win the heart of a high school heartthrob by killing off all of his football-playing rivals. One such rival is thrown a pass on the field and as the ball flies through the air it suddenly morphs into a large drill spearing its way into the unfortunate receiver. Not particularly sporting of her and certainly not something that most major sports betting sites like the ones listed on the BettingTop10 affiliate site would give you odds on. Even though trying to predict deaths and the way in which victims are dispatched in a horror movie would surely be a welcome addition to the line-up of services for most gambling operators in today’s world when people are ready to bet on almost anything. Just imagine horror movies as tournaments where you can put your wagers on the survivors.
HALLOWEEN H20: 20 YEARS LATER (1998)
By the late 90’s it was truly becoming more and more difficult for any self-respecting slasher icon to kill on-screen in new and memorable ways. It seemed that most weapons, tools, unusual murders, and downright ridiculous kills had all been covered by the usual suspects, such as Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger and Ghostface. But in 1998 when Michael Myers would once more return home to wreak havoc he managed to up the kill stakes once more by firmly planting an ice skate through the skull of a very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt and leaving him with a memorable splitting headache.
SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004)
Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright manage to provide a slightly more light-hearted look at how sporting equipment can feature around a good killing or two with their brilliant horror comedy ‘Shaun of the Dead’. This time around it’s the equipment itself providing the protection as opposed to being the choice tool of death for some deranged killer. It’s a good old fashioned cricket bat that provides Shaun the ideal weapon to help fend off zombies as he and his friends perilously make their way to their local pub to have a drink and wait for it all to blow over.
