    Director Talks Camp & Massacre

Just when you thought it was safe to start planning to send the kids away once school ends this year, Camp Motion Pictures is preparing to roll its second in-house production, CAESAR AND OTTO’S SUMMER CAMP MASSACRE. This horror/comedy will be written and directed by the aptly named Dave Campfield, who previously scripted and helmed the serious chiller DARK CHAMBER and asks Fango, “What would happen if you threw Abbott and Costello into an over-the-top slasher film? That’s more or less the concept behind my latest production.

“I used to love watching the horror/comedy crossovers as a young kid—films like ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN—and what I’m trying to do here is a modern-day equivalent,” he further tells us. “Expect a slapstick, gore-iffic comedy. The plot involves Caesar, an effete tough guy, and his slovenly brother Otto as they become counselors at Camp Sunsmile. But the camp has some surprises in store for them.” Campfield aims to have the movie completed by next summer.

In the meantime, DARK CHAMBER (originally titled UNDER SURVEILLANCE) is set for DVD release in first quarter 2008 by POPcinema. The story begins with a young man named Justin (Eric Conley) returning to live in his father’s house after 10 years, only to find it now contains three illegal apartments housing some rather unpleasant new tenants. When the latest victim of a series of local satanic cult killings is left on his lawn, Justin starts spying on his new housemates with hidden video equipment—putting his life in danger.

“I’ve always loved horror films and thrillers—THE EXORCIST remains one of my very favorite movies—but in recent years the genre has become less about characters, story and mounting atmosphere and more about just grossing out the audience,” Campfield says. “That’s one way to go, but I just don’t find it as satisfying. What I was attempting to do with DARK CHAMBER was make a film that would grab you with its story and characters in addition to its scares—something new, instead of the same clichés we keep seeing in this genre. It has gotten some festival recognition: Best Screenplay at the Terror Film Festival, Best Dramatic Film at the Long Island Film Festival and Best Supporting Actress at Ohio’s Indie Gathering.” The disc is set to include new footage shot exclusively for the home release, plus the following extras:

    • Audio commentary by Campfield
    • Making-of featurettes
    • Documentary about the real-life cult killing that inspired the story
    • Cast interviews
    • Outtakes

And more. You can see the movie’s official website here; we’ll bring you updates and art on CHAMBER and MASSACRE’s DVD releases in the near future.
