Don’t Look Now, More Remakes
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount (which is all about the remakes these days) and producer Mark (THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW) Gordon are planning an update of DON’T LOOK NOW, the 1973 chiller directed by Nicolas Roeg and based on the novel by Daphne (THE BIRDS) Du Maurier. The original starred Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as a couple who travel to Venice to try to recover after their daughter’s drowning, and begin experiencing frightening visions (and have a hot ‘n’ steamy love scene). Andrea Berloff is scripting, and inevitably, Gordon tells the trade that the ’73 film ‘was very much of its time, with a lot of atmospherics that wouldn’t necessarily work today. But it has a great idea and a wonderful backdrop and setting. We hope to take the feeling of the story, continue to set it in Venice and make it contemporary.’ For those keeping score, Paramount is also working on new versions of THE CRAZIES, THE BLOB and CRAWLSPACE; Gordon is also a producer on Hideo Nakata’s redux of THE ENTITY for Fox.
The Reporter also reveals that Touchstone Pictures has picked up American and some foreign distribution rights to INVISIBLE, the English-language version of the Swedish paranormal thriller. David S. (BLADE: TRINITY) Goyer directs the film from a script by Mick Davis, which was translated for the Swedish version and has been rewritten for the new film by Christine Roum. The story concerns a teenager who is murdered and finds himself a ghost invisible to the livingand has to track down his body before he truly perishes. The movie, originally set up at DreamWorks, rolls in Vancouver in September.
