The folks behind THE FERRYMAN, the New Zealand horror film that merges murder with mythology on the high seas, have announced its acquisition for U.S. release by First Look Studios. Having just had its world premiere at the Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Films, THE FERRYMAN will make its official North American debut at the Seattle Film Festival in May.
Back in April 2006, your Down Under Fango correspondent was able to eyeball some of the movie’s mayhem as it was shot from the edge of a pier in Auckland. A vivid impression remains of the man most murdered in the LORD OF THE RINGS series, Lawrence Makoare (who appeared as fearsome Uruk-Hai leader Lurtz), fighting it out with fellow RINGS actor John Rhys-Davies. More recently, Fango got the opportunity to view that sequence in all its savage completed glory care of producer Matt Metcalfe’s laptop. Suffice to say, relationships literally go to pieces in THE FERRYMAN, and it’s delivered in sea-sickening detail.
There was more than a bit of talk that night about the music tracks to be selected to support the action and score generated by Haim Frank Ilfman. The production now boasts a fine mix of classic Kiwi rock with more modern contributions, from bands including The Swingers, Th’ Dudes, Shihad and Cobra Khan, the latter doing a version of the Chris De Burgh claassic “Don’t Pay the Ferryman.”
