Horror Roundup: Scary Movies to Look Forward To in 2018

Last year was a great one for horror fans – the crop of horror movies released was great and included everything from multiple Oscar nominee “Get Out” to the brand new rendition of Stephen King’s “IT”, which become the highest-grossing horror movie of all time. And we have a new year ahead, with many great flicks (and some not so great ones) to be seen. So, given that the year is still young leaving us enough time to prepare for the scariest holiday of the year, let’s take a look at the most anticipated 5 great scary movies for Halloween coming to a screen nearby in 2018.

    Annihilation (February)

Although it is officially credited as a science fiction, Annihilation may easily work as a body horror flick. Made by Ex Machina director Alex Garland from a pressing, haunting novel by Jeff VanderMeer, it combines science (fiction), horror, and mystery. The result is said to be “unnerving”, “intellectual”, and “complicated”. The studio played it safe with this one: the movie has opened in the US in theaters but will be released by Netflix internationally.

The star of the film will be Natalie Portman, playing a biologist exploring the secrets – and horrors – of a strange phenomenon called “The Shimmer”.

    Slender Man (August)

Based on a popular urban legend, Slender Man is expected to be a pretty scary movie that might give us a brand new horror icon. For those of you unfamiliar with the story, the Slender Man is a tall, thin character in a black suit with a white, bald head and no face or hair. It has become notorious when it was linked to a stabbing in Wisconsin – two 12-year-old girls, convinced that the Slender Man is real, tried to express their devotion to him by stabbing a classmate 19 times.

The title character of the movie will be played by Spanish actor Javier Botet, standing 6.6 feet tall with a body weight of just 123 pounds.

    The Predator (September)

This is the second time the Predator is returning in a solo flick to the big screen. The first time, it was in Nimród Antal’s decent but not-too-much version with an impressive cast including Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Lawrence Fishburn, and others. This time, in turn, it will be directed by none other than Shane Black (Hawkins from the original Predator who also wrote a series of high-profile 1990s action flicks and directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, among others), and will be set between the events of Predator 2 (with Danny Glover and Gary Busey) and 2010’s Predators.

    Venom (October)

It is the second time Venom, the sentient Spider suit is featured in a film – but this time, it’s a solo flick rather than a Spider-Man feature. And it will have an R rating – this sounds very, very promising. It is officially credited as a superhero flick, but given the nature of the protagonist, and the rumors speaking of his main antagonist – who is said to be Cletus Kasady/Carnage (a deranged serial killer from the Spider-Man universe) it is safe to say that it will have some massive body horror/slasher elements.

Tom Hardy will play the title character (Eddie Brock/Venom).

    Halloween (October)

Last but not least, a traditional Halloween flick that will be released just in time for the scariest holiday of the year. John Carpenter’s classic slasher turns 40 this year. To celebrate this respectable age, a brand new sequel will be released, featuring none other than the sole survivor of the original Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis. Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode, but this time she won’t be the target of deranged serial killer Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) – it will be her daughter, Karen (Judy Greer) who will do most of the screaming.

The flick will be directed by David Gordon Green, based on a script he co-wrote with Danny McBride.
