The independent British horror boom continues to reveal new talents. Writer/producer/director Pat Higgins, whose first fear feature TRASHHOUSE became a cult favourite following its DVD release via Screen Entertainment this past February, recently completed a new horror feature called KILLER KILLER, which received its world premiere at Horrorfest UK, held in Portsmouth, England last week. Higgins describes TRASHHOUSE, produced by his Jinx Media Ltd. company, as “my own midnight movie, a little bit campy, a little bit cartoony. I wanted it to be a bit kitsch, but still go fairly full tilt on the blood and gore, doing it with a sort of nod and a wink. I liked juxtaposing the cheerful ’50s-style sitcom stuff [the main character’s obssession] with people getting their heads cut off!”
The success of TRASHHOUSE enabled the ambitious Higgins to obtain financing for two further off-the-wall horror pictures: He shot KILLER KILLER back to back with HELLBRIDE, which is currently in postproduction. The synopsis of KILLER KILLER reads, “Convicted murderers in a high security prison wake one morning to find that the guards have all gone, the doors are unlocked and the place looks ‘sick.’ But they can’t leave because there’s a mist, and it bites. It’s not long before the inmates start getting bumped off, but is it one of them doing it or is it someone else? The inmates are just dying to find out.” We’re not sure where the cheerleader fits into it…
Following KILLER KILLER’s first public screening, Higgins aims to follow the same route he took with TRASHHOUSE, showing the movie around the festival circuit prior to seeking distribution to cable TV and DVD. “We haven’t confirmed release dates for either movie,” he says, “but they are most likely to hit DVD in early 2007.”
