Another one of those pesky remake projects that just never seems to push forward with any great conviction is Paramount’s re-adaptation of Stephen King’s PET SEMATARY. Originally adapted for the big screen back in 1989 by King himself with Mary Lambert in the director’s chair it has become one of the more popular workings of the horror maestro’s back catalogue. The last we heard was that 28 WEEKS LATER helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was set to direct. That still appears to be the case but now MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN writer Jeff Buhler has jumped on board to pen the new version. According to Buhler both he and Fresnadillo pitched an outline to Paramount which they loved and he’s been working on the first draft ever since.
Here’s what Buhler told Dread Central in a recent interview:
“We are being very respectful to the book and we are not tying ourselves to anything in the first two films at all. We are [also] bringing in some fresh elements that speak to the spirit of the story that aren’t in either one. Juan Carlos and I have been working very closely from the beginning so I think the process will be very quick. It’s not going to be one of those situations where there’s a script that the studio likes but then they bring on a director who has a bunch of new ideas and then it goes back into the scripting process for another six months. Because we are doing everything with the director from the beginning, hopefully we won’t be far from where we need to be [with the first draft] when we are done.”
The unrelated flashback scenes featuring Rachel Creed’s sister Zelda still creep me out to this day! I wonder if this will make the cut?
