Slot machine developers are always looking for new sources of inspiration. Except for when they look for old ones – like movie hits of the past. Movie based slot machines are very popular today and more often than not the movies in which the designers build their game are classic titles from the golden age of film – horror and others alike or have been influenced by such classic horror movies of yesteryear. Today we’d like to show you a handful of video slots based on classic horror movies.
Psycho, by NextGen Gaming
Australian developer NextGen Gaming took on a major task: to create a worthy slot machine adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic horror movie Psycho. It was not an easy task, but the team nailed it: they created a game that will keep its players on the edge of their seat. The game’s visuals remind you of Hitchcock’s classic tale of horror and insanity, whilst the background music and the sound effects will even scare the living soul out of the faint hearted. If you would like to try it, this one is free here, so you can take it for a spin yourself.
NetEnt’s Universal Monsters Series
Under an agreement with Universal Studios, Swedish developer NetEnt have released several slot machines based on the best known horror movies from the Golden Era of Hollywood. Among them you can find one inspired by the Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man and Frankenstein. Three movies that helped shape our tastes for horror, as well as the whole horror movie industry, and left their indelible mark even on today’s genre offerings. The games’ visuals are faithful to the original movies, and the special features are always tied to the stories. The Universal Monsters series is built with a great attention to detail, and pays a worthy tribute to the the legendary monsters (and actors that played them) of the past.
Aliens, by NetEnt
We’ve left the best to last. While we don’t exactly feel comfortable calling an ongoing series a “classic” we think Aliens deserves this title, even if it’s sometimes considered to be a science fiction movie rather than a horror. Aliens is a slot machine inspired by the 1986 James Cameron blockbuster follow-up, which also borrows a few elements from the Alien vs. Predator video game that was released much later. NetEnt has outdone itself with this slot machine. The game is atmospheric and exciting, with visuals and sounds to keep you on the edge of your seat. The game’s special feature is similar to a first person shooter game – a colonial marine has to fight his (or her?) way through an Alien-infested colony, shooting face-huggers, adult xenomorphs, and finally having to defeat the Queen herself.
