SAW LOSES SOME TEETH
James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s Saw opens nationwide September 17th to an anxious genre fanbase. It appears, however, that Lions Gate had to make a few necessary cuts to the film as Wan explained to Bloody-Disgusting in an interview yesterday…
The version that is making the festival runs is the one I wanted to release. The theatrical version has been trimmed to make the ‘R’ rating. I want to re-instate the full version for the director’s cut DVD at some point. But the really amazing thing is that, there’s only ONE ENDING to SAW! I didn’t have to shoot any alternate ones. In this day and age of multiple endings, I’m really proud that we managed to get away with this one.
It all sounds like standard procedure to me these days. Many of you will think the Gate has lost its balls, trimming Saw the way they are, but you have to keep in mind that when they release High Tension (a.k.a. Haute Tension) in ’05 it’s going to carry an NC-17 label. When it comes to the MPAA you’ve got to pick and choose your battles.
Nevertheless, I’m sure Saw will lose none of its impact come September.
