SHAUN AT COMIC CON
Joblo reports from the panel of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright from the UK rom-zom-com Shaun of the Dead at this years Comic Con:
‘This was a fun panel to watch and listen to. SHAUN OF THE DEAD is an English romantic comedy action horror zombie flick set in suburbia. It made more in its opening weekend in the U.K. than 28 DAYS LATER on top of out-grossing the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake over there. September 24th is the date of release on this side of the pond. Edgar and Simon came off like average joes that were just happy to get there little zombie flick made. Theyre both devoted fans of the Romero movies (in fact, theyd been out drinking with Ken Foree a few nights before) and you could tell they were just trying to give their own comedic take on it and are very proud of and humbled by its success so far. In fact, they sent Romero a copy of the film at his home in Florida and were a little uneasy about what hed think considering the man was not too impressed with this DAWN OF THE DEAD remake. They say George loved it. Here are a few things I learned from these blokes
They love their video games. They love the Resident Evil games. They hated the RESIDENT EVIL movie.
An audience member tried collecting on the handjobs the director had promised the crowd at a screening of the film a few nights before. I told you these guys were cool. A good laugh was had by all.
We were shown a brand new trailer of the film, one that focused much more on how FUNNY this movie really is. The audience went berserk with laughter. Im personally anticipating this movie even more now than I than before.
The main characters played by Simon Pegg (Shaun) and Nick Frost (Ed) are actually inspired by the writers. They, like the characters, lived together and always went to same pub. This film is very true in the sense that it reflects on many things that were going on in the lives of the writers at the time (lounging on the couch, girlfriend troubles, dead end job, etc.)
A rude fanboy accused Edgar and Simon of ripping off Romeros DAWN OF THE DEAD and got several boos from the crowd. Edgar then noticed the man in question was none other than CABIN FEVER director and promotional wizard Eli Roth. Eli then proceeded to run around screaming that SHAUN OF THE DEAD rules and Its awesome! Its awesome! Eli Roth is one cool son-of-a-bitch!
At one point, Edgar questioned the audience and asked by show of hands if they preferred slow or fast zombies. The slow ones won out.
Edgar and Simon said they would love the opportunity to be zombies in the upcoming Romero project LAND OF THE DEAD. It looks like theyll get their wish.
Simon also showed a very lengthy montage from his popular British sitcom SPACED and urged the crowd (who absolutely loved it, as did I) to beg their local cable channels and/or networks to pick up this show in the U.S.
Romero did not mind that in their version, the people bitten by zombies turn into zombies themselves almost immediately as opposed to the slower process in his DOTD.
They both promised a brand new commentary track on the region 1 version of the DVD that well be getting of SHAUN OF THE DEAD (sometime next year I imagine).
Word is, the film includes 77 f*cks and 1 c*nt.’
