WANT TO BE A ZOMBIE?
So let’s say, for some reason, that you’re sitting in front of your PC, thinking about Romero finally getting behind the camera to make his fourth Dead movie, and for some reason you just can’t get excited. Too many false starts? Too jaded on all the bad zombie movies we’ve seen? Worried George may not have what it takes anymore?
Well, if you need any reason to get excited about Land of the Dead, Fangoria has provided it for you in the form of a lengthy interview with effects master and all around nice guy Greg Nicotero, who’s KNB Effects will be the main zombie makers for Romero’s forever-in-the making zombie epic. But what can he do that hasn’t been done before?
‘We dont want to do CGI zombies; I dont want to remove peoples faces digitally. I want to do it for real, and George has basically said, as weve gone through the screenplay, Greg, Id like 10 or 12 zombie gags that people are going to look at and say, How did they do that? My goal is to create characters that, 20 years from now, people will come to a convention with a photo of that zombie and want me to sign it.’
What does that mean? Tons of practical effects. And tons of practical effects need tons of humans behind them, so expect a ‘cattle call’ in the wilds of Toronto soon for zombie extras. And my GOD how I wish I could be one of ’em.
Though little about Land of the Dead is known (since it’s changed a lot since the Dead Reckoning script that was out there a few years back), Nicetero does say that we’re going to see an evolution of the idea presented in Day of the Dead that zombies can think. They can learn. They can, say, take over a planet. Like ours.
