The intrepid reporter Dave Davis recently got the chance to chat with Rise director Sebastian Gutierrez on the set of the film, currently shooting for Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and starring the easy-on-the-eyes Lucy Liu. It’s the first time we know of that Gutierrez has discussed the film in any real detail, so we’d thought you’d dig some snippets.
First and foremost, we can’t really blame the guy for the crappiness that was Gothika, the last high-profile gig he had (as screenwriter) because he says there were two guys brought in that pretty much re-wrote the entire thing save for the premise. If that’s the case, perhaps Rise has got more hope than we had originally thought.
“My idea is, it’s a vampire movie. I love the vampire myth, it’s existed in every culture for thousands of years, but I thought, “What’s the last vampire movie I really liked?” For me, the moment there’s fangs or garlic or flying it becomes campy and I’m not scared anymore. So what if you made a thriller set in the real world about a cult, you never mention the word vampire – you’re never gonna see the shot of a vampire biting into the neck. It’s a cult. Of the undead. I mean, I don’t believe in vampires. Unless of course someone came and killed me and I woke up in the morgue … How would you explain that?”
