ROBERT HALL’S LIGHTNING BUG
Monster maker Robert Hall will be taking a break from BUFFY and ANGEL work to direct his first feature, LIGHTNING BUG, which he also wrote and will executive-produce with Kevin Bocarde. Its set in 1989, Hall tells Fango, and its about a young kid growing up in Alabama who dreams of making monsters. Hes got his own monsters at homean ill-tempered stepdad and the religious fanatic mother of the girl he loves who works at a video store. Its a weird juxtaposition as he escapes the real-life horrors of his life into a fantasy world. From the outside looking in, especially in this Bible Belt area, hes deemed a weird kid and maybe satanic, but when he steps into his trailer, the real-life monsters there are 1,000 times worse. A lot of people have said its like SLING BLADE meets FOOTLOOSE meets CARRIE, whatever that means.
Were still casting, Hall continues, but weve got Ashley [HELLRAISER] Laurence, Kevin [STRANGELAND] Gage as the mean stepdad, Hal Sparks from QUEER AS FOLK as a deputy and Donald Gibb [Ogre in REVENGE OF THE NERDS] as the guys uncle, who has a bit of a medical problem. There are some other great actors, genre-related people, who are pending. My company Almost Human is doing the makeup FX, of course, which is going to involve a lot of stuff that this teenage kid is makingyou see him slowly evolving and getting better. Shooting is scheduled to begin May 19 in Alabama; see www.lightningbugthemovie.com for more.
