Variety reports:
Gold Circle Films and Vertigo Entertainment are teaming to produce “In-Utero,” a remake of Hong Kong horror pic “Jian Gui 2” (The Eye 2). New Line has picked up domestic distribution rights.
A U.S. remake of the original pic, which had a completely separate plot, is in development with Vertigo at Paramount.
Film is about a pregnant woman who has a near-death experience that results in her seeing dead spirits. Scribe Todd Stein has been set to adapt.
Gold Circle (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) will finance “In-Utero” with a budget around $25 million. Company has a first-look deal with Universal, which passed on the pic.
Mandate Pictures, which regularly sells Gold Circle pics overseas, will handle that task on “In-Utero.”
Vertigo principals Roy Lee and Doug Davison are producing along with Gold Circle prexy Paul Brooks.
Gold Circle’s Scott Niemeyer and Norm Waitt are exec producing, while company’s Zak Kadison, who identified project and approached Vertigo, will be co-producer.
Toby Emmerich, George Waud and Jeff Katz oversee for New Line.
Gold Circle and Vertigo also are teaming on horror pic “Smoke.”
