Variety reports that Zeitgeist Films has picked up the U.S. rights to LUNACY, the latest film by Jan (LITTLE OTIK) Svankmajer. A live-action film shot through with Svankmajer’s traditional twisted animation sequences, LUNACY is based on both the stories of Edgar Allan Poe and the Marquis de Sade, and follows a young man as he joins the Marquis on a trip to an asylum where strange forms of therapy are practiced. The movie will have its North American premiere as part of New York City’s Tribeca Film Festival, and a source at Zeitgeist tells Fango that the movie will also play in NYC at the Film Forum starting August 8.
Zeitgeist additionally grabbed U.S. rights to THE PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKES, the latest from twin surrealist filmmakers The Quay Brothers. This one’s about an evil inventor who murders a beautiful opera singer on stage and steals her body, with plans to transform her into an automaton to star in his own “diabolical opera.” No specific release plans have yet been determined.
